How do I know this?Because I spent three years, after having our district library budget cut by 60%, advocating at the local level to explain why we should get it back.
I attended board meetings and learned about the district budgeting process. I also learned very quickly that most people had absolutely no idea what a school librarian did. Librarians were like the teachers who lived under the desk. So, I became a one-woman PR team, and over the next two years continued my advocacy until we had a portion of our budget reinstated, which was more than I ever expected. |
In my years of advocating for our program, I have learned a lot about how to
- Showcase a library program in a way that doesn’t cause burnout
- Speak up and share information that appeals to all stakeholders, yep, even the numbers folks

Questions you may be asking...
Who is this kit for?
This kit is specifically designed for school librarians who want to save some time and energy when it comes to planning for School Library Month. This is also a kit to help showcase all of the wonderful things happening in the school library. It can be used during any month of the year, or spread out over several months.
What if I am an Elementary librarian? Will this apply to me too?
This action kit is designed to be used by school librarians at all levels. While there are social media templates, you can also print those same graphics after you have customized them and post them on a bulletin board or classroom space.
Do I need a Canva Pro account?
No, in fact everything is designed to be used with the free version of Canva, however I would encourage you to create your free account and then apply for the educator account using your school email address. This will give you all the functionality of a Pro account without the cost!
Is it only for School Library Month? What if I don’t want to use this for SLM, but for general advocacy?
While this kit is specifically designed to be used during School Library Month. Many of the ideas and templates could apply all year round and could be used over several months if you choose.
Can I purchase this now, instead of waiting for SLM?
Absolutely! You can purchase this kit at any time during the year and then you will be all set for SLM!
Why is it called an action kit?
I use the phrase Action Kit because this resource is more than just an eBook, or a set of templates. What you receive truly works as a kit, with information and prompts as well as templates you can edit and apply to your own school library program. It is content that is meant to be actionable and easy to use “right out of the box” so to speak.
